Customize post types

Define the formats staff can create, the fields they fill, the public page those posts become, and the rates those assignments pay.

Create or edit a type

  1. Open Settings → Post types

Only a News Desk admin can change types. Read an existing type before creating a new one so roles, URL prefix, and rates stay consistent.

  2. Choose New post type or Edit

Name is the label staff see in Add a post. Slug is the technical identity (lowercase letters, digits, and underscores) and cannot change after save.

  3. Set the Public URL prefix

Permalink is /{prefix}/{post-slug}. Articles with prefix news stay at /news/article/{slug}.

  4. Define Roles and exactly one Primary role

The primary role drives the main byline and rate slot. Add role only when the production workflow needs a second assignment.

  5. Set Primary rate and Secondary rate

A $0.00 rate deliberately creates no payable for that slot. Record rate approval outside the software.

  6. Choose Save post type

Editor layout and public template stay disabled until this first save succeeds.

Design the editor layout

  1. Choose Edit editor layout

Add only the fields staff need. Field kinds include text, textarea, url, number, checkbox, select, list, tags, contest, markdown, and html.

  2. Use markdown for story copy

A markdown field is the body staff write in and preview. Keep one primary markdown field per type unless the format truly needs two.

  3. Label custom fields clearly

Unknown custom fields are stored as text. The label on the editor is what staff will understand a year from now.

  4. Save the layout

Create a test post of this type and confirm every field appears before you enable the type for the newsroom.

Design the public template

  1. Choose Edit public template

The template is Mustache. Use {{{field}}} only for html or markdown fields; escaped {{field}} is for plain text.

  2. Preview on a real published example

Check mobile and desktop. A type with no public adapter still participates in workflow, calendar, and payroll but will not appear in the intended reader-facing collection.

  3. Save the template

Then publish a test post and open the public URL before telling staff the type is ready.

Enable it for staff

The Enabled checkbox controls whether Add a post lists the type. Disabling hides it from new creates; existing posts keep their type. The built-in article type cannot be disabled.

  • Roles, prefix, and rates are saved.
  • Editor layout includes every field a finished post of this format needs.
  • Public template preview matches a real published example.
  • A full test post can be created, submitted, reviewed, and published.
  • Payroll created the expected payable for the test assignment — or a $0.00 rate was intentional.

Frequently asked questions

Can staff change a post’s type after creation?

No. Type is fixed. Recreate the post if the wrong type was chosen.

Why is Edit editor layout disabled?

Save the post type first. Layout and template designers need a stored type id.

Does enabling a type put anything on the website?

No. It only lets staff create posts of that type. Public output still requires a template or adapter and a published post.
