  • Kendall Vergien, Tori Verostko and Leena Osinski are tri-captains after leading the group through offseason play and tournaments.
  • Addyson Felser is expected to be central in the midfield, while Morgan Rothfuss is a player to watch on penalty corners.
  • Natalie Webster and Brooke Wiatrowski move up from JV into the goalkeeper picture as Iroquois builds varsity experience in goal.

Iroquois Builds Around Its Returning Attack

Iroquois enters the 2026 field hockey season with a clear mix of continuity and renovation.

Coach Pete Tonsoline said about half the team is made up of returning starters from last year's 16-2 group. The attack gives Iroquois its steadiest starting point, and Tonsoline said the offense is mostly intact while the midfield positions bring experience into the new season.

"There were gaps that needed to be filled from graduated seniors, but some underclassmen have risen to the task," Tonsoline said.

That puts the early focus on the places where Iroquois is replacing the most.

"Defense and goaltending need game play and experience because this is where we lost most of our graduated players," Tonsoline said.

The goalkeeping situation begins with Natalie Webster and Brooke Wiatrowski, both juniors moving up from JV. Tonsoline said both will need varsity experience early as Iroquois reshapes the back of the field.

Speed And Variety Up Front

Tonsoline wants Iroquois to be known for pace and a varied attack.

"We will be fast attacking with a diverse offense that can move up the field quickly and transition rapidly," he said.

The attacking plan is built to be difficult to load up against. Tonsoline said Iroquois can strike from the left, middle or right side, and the team's penalty corners use multiple formations with shots coming from different locations.

Morgan Rothfuss is one of the names to watch on those corners. She had four goals and three assists as a sophomore last season, giving Iroquois another returning piece near the circle. Leena Osinski, a junior attack, had one goal and five assists last season and was named by Tonsoline as a player who could become an important new contributor in a larger role.

Kendall Vergien gives the attack a proven senior presence. She scored 11 goals with three assists last season, and Tonsoline named her as his best candidate for a breakout season.

Leadership Through The Middle

Vergien, Tori Verostko and Osinski are Iroquois' tri-captains. Tonsoline said the two seniors and one junior have led the team through offseason play and tournaments.

Addyson Felser is another key name in the midfield. Tonsoline identified her as the midfield engine entering the season, and she returns after recording three assists as a junior.

Tonsoline's own tenure remains one of the program's defining through-lines. This season begins his 32nd as Iroquois' varsity coach after 10 years with the JV program. He began his field hockey coaching career under Barb Millar.
