Spartans building around energy and returning pieces
Williamsville North enters the 2026 boys volleyball season with a clear sense of what it wants to become: a team that can defend, side out and attack from more than one spot on the floor.
Assistant coach Paul Morphy described the season ahead as “one of promise and opportunity,” with a young roster preparing for a demanding Class A and ECIC I schedule.
“This is a young team competing in a very challenging league, but the players are hungry to prove themselves,” Morphy said. “While experience will need to be gained on the court, the group's energy, chemistry, and determination give it a chance to surprise opponents and grow into a competitive force as the season unfolds.”
The Spartans finished 8-11 in 2025-26, according to results published by HighSchoolSports.org, and return several players the staff expects to shape the new season.
Evan Morphy, a Class of 2028 outside hitter, is at the center of that outlook. Paul Morphy identified him as a returning starter, a leading presence in kills, aces, passing, digs and leadership, and the player most likely to take another step forward. Evan Morphy is also set to return this fall to the invite-only National Training Development Program in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Alex Prescott, a Class of 2027 outside hitter and setter, is another major piece. After working as a starting setter, Prescott is expected to move into a new outside role, where the staff sees him as part of the team’s biggest strength alongside Evan Morphy.
Tyler Drzewucki gives North another returning outside option with defensive value and passing ability. Ryan Kajdas returns in the middle, where the Spartans are looking for blocking and a consistent middle attack. John Van is expected to be the main libero and a key presence in serve receive and defense.
The setter role shifts to Knox Sun, a Class of 2028 setter who will direct the varsity offense for the first time. Morphy said Sun’s athleticism, play calling and jump-float serve will be important as North works to establish consistency.
Paul Morphy said North’s goals include winning the league and competing in the state finals. Consistency, middle blocking and middle hitting are areas the team wants to develop.
