Medina rallies past Albion in five sets for first win

Medina rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Albion 3-2 Friday at Medina High School, earning their first girls volleyball victory of the season.

Albion won the opening set 25-20 and edged Medina 27-25 in the second. Medina answered with a 25-22 win in the third, evened the match with a 25-16 fourth set and completed the comeback 15-12 in the fifth.

Medina coach Connie Heschke credited Albion with finding openings in her team's defense during the first two sets. She said Medina improved their coverage and worked together as the match progressed, identifying the fourth set as the turning point.

Heschke said: “The 4th set was the turn around, our girls were all over the court and the serves were on point.”

Maddy Watts finished with six aces, all served consecutively according to Heschke. Maya Anderson recorded six kills and added two blocks and an ace. Heschke praised Anderson's timing at the net.

Samantha Heschke and Caliyah St. Louis each supplied five aces and three kills. Jenna Cecchini added three aces and three kills, and Payton Denniston contributed three kills and an ace.

The victory brought Medina to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in N-O play. Albion fell to 1-6 overall and 0-5 in the division. Medina stood fifth and Albion sixth in the division standings through Friday's contest.
